Painter Park Improvements: Public hearing on January 19 at 6:30pm

Everyone is welcome to comment on the concept plan before Commissioners consider it for approval.

A public hearing on the concept plan for improvements at Painter Park will be held on January 19, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. at the Mary Merrill Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Headquarters Building, 2117 West River Road, Minneapolis.

The hearing allows individuals to comment on the concept plan by speaking or submitting written comments to Commissioners for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB); see details on these options below.

Painter Park’s proposed concept plan (pictured above and available on the project website) incorporates guidance and direction from the Lyndale and South Uptown neighborhood communities, MPRB staff and park users, as well as from the Southwest Service Area Master Plan adopted in 2020.

As proposed, the project is planned for construction in 2022 and includes the following features:

  • new skatepark
  • renovated tennis courts with pickleball striping
  • new basketball courts
  • boulder scramble area
  • gathering spaces
  • naturalized planting areas

Next steps for the project

Board approval: Following the public hearing before MPRB’s Planning Committee, the full Board of Commissioners will consider approving the concept plan.

Final design, construction bids: With Board approval, project staff will develop a final design for the project and receive bids from construction contractors.

Construction: With a successful bid, project construction is planned to begin in 2022.

How to submit public hearing comments

During this COVID-19 period and to minimize the risk of exposure to or potential spread of COVID-19, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has added options, noted below, for comments to be submitted for its public meetings and hearings, authorized under Minn. Statutes, Section 13D.02.

Most Commissioners will call into the Board meeting, which will be broadcast live via web and TV options; videos of past meetings appear on MPRB’s Board meetings playlist on YouTube.
