Final update: Fall 2021 regional trail repairs (Nov. 2, 2021)

This week, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is wrapping up work to fill cracks and add a seal-coat layer for a smoother and more durable surface.

  • Lake Nokomis and Victory Memorial Drive locations: In the last two weeks, crews finished sealcoating and line striping.
  • On Victory Memorial Drive, two sections required re-striping due to problems with the painting process. Those sections were covered and re-striped with an alternate process, with results that met MPRB standards.

This fall, crews worked on a total of 8.2 miles of trail surfaces at the following locations: Cedar Lake Park, Lake of the Isles Park, Bde Maka Ska Park, Lake Nokomis Park, Victory Memorial Drive, Webber Park, and a Grand Rounds Scenic Byway trail segment at Columbia Golf Club. At most locations, the work took between two and four days, barring delays.

Additional trail repairs

In addition to seal coating, crews are using infrared asphalt repair to fix root heaves, cracking and other deteriorated areas at Lake Harriet and Lake Nokomis parks.

This repair method heats existing asphalt, adds new asphalt and rejuvenating oils, then levels and re-compacts the surface: See “before” and “after” images below. Re-using asphalt makes infrared repair more cost effective and sustainable – and not susceptible to damage from water infiltration – compared to methods that involve cutting, removing and replacing asphalt.

More repairs of this type are planned for next year!
