The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is pleased to announce that it is moving forward on the improvements project at the park known as the 28th Street Totlot.
Construction of planned park improvements
The plan was developed in 2022-2023 using recommendations from the Southwest Service Area Master Plan for all neighborhood parks in Southwest Minneapolis. Construct will begin this fall and include:
- playground
- entry plaza and path
- site furnishings
- landscaping
Status of planned skatepark
MPRB partner City of Skate is leading the final design phase for the skatepark that is also part of the plan for park improvements. When it has completed construction drawings, City of Skate intends to donate them to MPRB, and construction will begin once funding for this feature is identified.
Land ownership of 28th Street Totlot site
At a regular meeting last month, Park Board Commissioners approved funding to purchase the 28th Street Totlot parkland parcel from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).
MPRB typically owns land it has established as parkland. In this case, MPRB had leased the land since 1968, when it became available during construction of the I-35W freeway.
In Fall 2017, MnDOT needed to use the site as a staging area for its project to upgrade I-35W, so the park was closed for several years.
This summer, MnDOT contractors are preparing the 28th Street Totlot parcel for its sale to MPRB and construction of the park improvements mentioned above.
