Ryan Lake Park, in the far northwestern corner of the city, is among the newer properties in the Minneapolis park system. It was acquired from the City of Minneapolis by swapping land in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood (formerly known as Svea Triangle), which the city wanted for road realignment and stormwater management purposes.

The parkland exists as a permanent easement a permanent easement between Xerxes Avenue North and the lakeshore. Ryan Lake also includes shoreline in Robbinsdale and Brooklyn Center.

In 2015, the park was improved with the installation of a floating dock, bike racks, plantings, and a pathway. Canoe racks were installed in 2018.

The park consists of a narrow strip of land between the lake and Xerxes Avenue on the lake’s eastern edge, and between the water and railroads on the lake’s northern edge. The northern portion of the park is primarily emergent vegetation, as the lake basin appears to approach the railroad embankment. The eastern portion includes high ground with a vegetated shoreline.
