Riverside Park Improvements

Funding sources and park history

In Summer 2019, the MPRB approved the Mississippi Gorge Regional Park Master Plan, which included Riverside Park. The plan identified a need for several recreation amenity improvements, including play area and wading pool updates, but more importantly a stronger, more transparent, connection between the upper portion of Riverside Park to the lower portion of the park and the Mississippi River. Currently there is a “wall of woods” on the north side of the park along the river’s bluff that is significantly overgrown. The bluff is steep but manageable; it once had a roadway that dipped about halfway down from the upper portion to the remaining stone steps. The vegetation over the bluff, as well as poorly maintained access routes, cut the upper park off from the Mississippi River and the Grand Rounds system and discourages easy and safe movement of neighborhood residents.
