Role Summary

Under the supervision of the Recreation Supervisor and direction of the Childcare Specialist, assist in leading a safe and dependable childcare for school age children. Provide leadership and direction during period of the day alternate the Childcare Specialist schedule that supports the standards of Rec Plus. Provide direct childcare for school age (K‐6) children and create a positive, safe and nurturing environment for children registered in Rec Plus (school age childcare program).

Compensation

$17-$22/per hour depending on education and experience. You are eligible to receive sick and safe time per the Minneapolis City Ordinance and Minnesota Earned Sick and Safe Time, and will earn one (1) hour of sick and safe leave for every thirty (30) hours worked. Public employees will be enrolled in statutorily required Public Employers Retirement Association (PERA) pension contributions if/when eligible.  This position is not eligible for other benefits

Hours

Monday-Friday 10-25 hours/week. Shifts are flexible between 7:00-9:30am OR 2:30-5:30 during school year. Summer hours vary.

Essential Job Duties (but not limited to)

  • Ensure every registered child is safely supervised and accounted for throughout each day.
  • Assist in planning of daily structured activities and schedules alongside the Childcare Specialist and/or during the alternate shift of the Childcare Specialist that coincide with the Rec Plus Curriculum Guidelines.
  • Provide direction to part-time Rec Plus staff in the absence of and alongside the Childcare Specialist
  • Communicate with parents/guardians and build rapport
  • Appropriately and effectively act on children’s behavior issues and/or injuries involving children in a timely manner.
  • Provide direct childcare and oversee the direct care of all children, including children with special needs through collaboration with the Therapeutic Recreation and Inclusion team.
  • Engage in structured and non‐structured activities/programs and special course offerings, including crafts, outdoor play, cooking class, soccer, football, open gym and other scheduled activities. Complete other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School diploma and completion of post‐secondary degree with two (2) courses in child development or closely related field (i.e. recreation, youth studies, elementary education).
  • One year of work experience providing direct childcare or school age programming children (ages 5-12) in facility-based setting.
  • An equivalent combination of related experience, education and training may be considered.

Licenses/Certificates

  • CPR and First Aid Certification prior to start of summer

  • Learn and utilize childcare attendance system.
  • Motivate and mentor children between the ages of 5-12 showing flexibility, creativity and excellent communication skills.
  • Perform a variety of tasks to attend to children’s interests and problems.
  • Work effectively with diverse cultural and economic populations and demonstrate good cross cultural communication skills.
  • Communicate professionally and effectively both verbally and in writing with staff, families and participants.
  • Work in a team environment; demonstrate flexibility and patience in adapting to changing conditions and situations.
  • Maintain composure and professionalism in sometimes chaotic or stressful situations.
  • Maintain confidentiality in work-related matters.

We conduct a background check.
