Role Summary
Provide safe, dependable childcare for school age children (ages 5-12 years) at assigned Rec Plus sites. Ensure the environment and recreation-based curriculum provides learning experiences to meet each participant’s needs.
Compensation
$16.00-19.00 per hour depending on education and experience. You are eligible to receive sick and safe time per the Minneapolis City Ordinance and Minnesota Earned Sick and Safe Time, and will earn one (1) hour of sick and safe leave for every thirty (30) hours worked. Public employees will be enrolled in statutorily required Public Employers Retirement Association (PERA) pension contributions if/when eligible. This position is not eligible for other benefits.
Hours
M-F 10-25 hours/week shifts are flexible between 7:00-9:30am OR 2:30-5:30pm during school year. Hours vary for summer.
Essential Job Duties
- Provide direct childcare for school age (K-6) children and create a positive, safe and nurturing environment for children registered in Rec Plus (before/after-school, summer program).
- Assist Childcare Specialist with assigned duties and tasks, including leadership of program in Rec Plus Childcare Specialist’s absence.
- Actively participate and supervise youth in their activities (structured and non-structured, including crafts, outdoor play, cooking class, open gym and other scheduled activities.
- Supports program participants with special needs.
- Complete other duties and special projects as assigned.
Preferred Training and Experience
- High School diploma and completion of post-secondary degree with two (2) courses in child development or closely related field (i.e. recreation, youth studies, elementary education).
- Three months of work experience providing direct childcare or recreation programming children (ages 5-12) in facility-based setting.
- Minimum Age 16.
Licenses/Certificates
CPR Certification, First Aid within three (3) months of hire

- Motivate and mentor children between the ages of 5-12 showing flexibility, creativity, and communication skills.
- Perform a variety of tasks to attend to children’s interests and problems.
- Work effectively with diverse cultural and economic populations.
- Demonstrate and teach appropriate social skills to youth through planned curriculum, role modeling and positive reinforcement.
- Work in a team environment; demonstrate flexibility and patience in adapting to changing conditions.
- Maintain confidentiality, composure and professionalism in sometimes chaotic or stressful work-related situations
Background Check
We conduct a background check. Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.
