Construction is 35 percent complete!
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is making a historic investment to expand and transform facilities at North Commons Park. When completed, the park’s northeast corner will include a new three-gym fieldhouse, lobby and renovated community center, as well as a new waterpark.
Updates
- Installation of structural steel over the fieldhouse is well under way. Placement of roof trusses has begun at the building’s south end, moving to the north. Roof decking follows, kicking off the process of fully enclosing the new facility. Check out this process on an updated time-lapse video showing the construction site from early December through the end of February.
What’s Next
- Structural steel installation over the aquatics building west of the fieldhouse will begin when the fieldhouse steel work is complete.
- Glu-laminated (“glulam”) wood beams will arrive at the site in April: newly fabricated beams as well as those salvaged from the old water park building,
- Interior work on the full facility – the fieldhouse, the aquatics building and the lobby/lounge connecting them – will begin this spring.
Things to Note
- RJM Construction, the project’s construction manager, began hosting monthly tours at the construction site for high school students, in partnership with the Minneapolis Building Trades Council and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. Students learn about the construction process and workplace opportunities in the industry. Roosevelt High School students participated in February’s tour.
- North Commons Community Center is open!

- Regular school-year hours are Monday-Friday 3-8 pm, Saturday 12-5 pm (closed Sunday).
Minneapolis Parks Foundation Campaign
The Minneapolis Parks Foundation (MPF) is the primary philanthropic partner of the MPRB. Its current campaign, Transforming North Commons Park is raising $23.5 million for this historic park project.
