Beginning Tuesday, September 6, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) will temporarily close Van Cleve Recreation Center for abatement work and to start construction of the following interior improvements:
- New ADA/gender neutral restrooms and storage, to be constructed in currently unused locker rooms
- Installation of an air conditioning system to serve the entire building
The building will be closed for about five weeks, with plans to re-open in mid-October. After it re-opens, construction activities will continue at least through the remainder of the year; MPRB will sent project updates as needed.
These improvements are funded by the 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan (NPP20), a long-term initiative that reverses decades of underfunding. NPP20 rehabilitation funds go to critical repairs, accessibility improvements, energy efficiency and other upgrades that fall outside large capital investment projects.
Van Cleve’s recreation center improvements follow two other projects this year in the park: new play areas, celebrated with an August 8 ribbon cutting (images below); and a new, 800-foot neighborhood trail segment along the park’s southwest side (right).
