Updates to design and construction schedule

Design changes

The plan layout for the aquatics facility remodeling and addition at the Phillips Community Center has improved since the schematic design was presented and approved by the MPRB Commissioners in October 2015.

Based on recommendations from recreation center staff to improve safety and building management, the remodeled building will continue to have only two entrances: The west entrance from the parking lot for recreation and aquatics facilities; and the 13th Avenue entrance for Waite House.

Another notable change is switching locations for the teen center and fitness center. The new locations allow easier access to the teen center from the entrance, and place the fitness center closer to the pool and gym to create a combined fitness area.

New construction schedule

The design changes and efforts to secure additional funding for the project have extended the design and planning process. Public construction bids are now planned for October 2016, with construction beginning later this year and an opening for the aquatics facility in November 2017. The Recreation Center and Waite House are expected to remain open during construction; however, the teen center and fitness center will be closed for a portion of time for remodeling.
