Hennepin County plans on reconstructing the existing County Road 81 (Broadway Avenue Bridges) located on the border of Minneapolis and Robbinsdale. The West Broadway Avenue corridor is a significant regional corridor. It provides an essential connection in the metro area, supports local and regional economic development, and supports the North Memorial Medical Center immediately west of the intersection. The West Broadway Avenue bridges span the intersection of Oakdale Avenue/Lowry Avenue and Theodore Wirth Parkway/Victory Memorial Parkway. Theodore Wirth Parkway and Victory Memorial Parkway are part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway, which includes the Grands Rounds Trail.
The proposed improvements seek to provide safer travel for motorized and non-motorized traffic; reduce intersection size below the bridges with a balanced solution for all modes of travel; improve on and off-street bicycle connections; and support more turf and less paved surfaces.
