The Quaking Bog boardwalk in Theodore Wirth Regional Park will be replaced this year

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is pleased to share that the boardwalk traveling through the Quaking Bog in Theodore Wirth Regional Park will be replaced this year.

Work will happen in two phases. The interior loop will be replaced this summer, then a larger loop will be added in the fall. MPRB Environmental Management staff will prepare the area for construction by removing existing boardwalk materials, clearing invasive species, and preparing access to the bog from the staging area in a nearby parking lot as part of the first phase.

New Boardwalk Details

  • A new boardwalk frame and wood decking system features some floating and suspended elements.
  • Boardwalk floats are spaced to allow water, air, and light through, which will benefit the native ecosystem.
  • Low rails will help keep visitors on the boardwalk to protect the sensitive ecological environment.
  • Seating will be added in a few select areas for visitor comfort.
  • A new access point will be added to allow for easier access and egress from the area and additional capacity.
  • New signage will be added to entry areas as part of the Theodore Wirth Regional Park Wayfinding project.
