Construction is scheduled to begin soon for several short-term priority trail segments identified in the Nokomis-Hiawatha Park Master Plan. Public bids were received on July 2, 2024 and the MPRB Board of Commissioners recently approved authorization of a construction contract. We expect preliminary construction staking to occur in the coming weeks, with actual construction beginning by mid-September. Any construction work that is not able to be completed this year will be finished in 2025.
The project areas, based on community feedback in order of importance, are:
- Area C – Trail connection between Nokomis Parkway and Cedar Avenue Bridge
- Area I – New pedestrian bridge over Minnehaha Creek
- Area D – Cedar Avenue Bridge connection and crossing at Nokomis Parkway and 52nd Street
- Area G – Trail crossing at 22nd Avenue South
- Area B – Pedestrian path along Lake Nokomis Parkway
In addition to the trail segments, a new concrete median will be constructed on the north leg of the Cedar Avenue and Lake Nokomis Parkway intersection, based on a pilot project to reduce vehicle speed and improve pedestrian safety led by City of Minneapolis and Hennepin County.
