Oak savanna restoration project begins at Bohemian Flats Park

Southern 4.5 acres of the park will be rejuvenated with plants and oak tree varieties

An oak savanna landscape is being planted at Bohemian Flats Park this year! Work began this week on a project that will decompact the soil in the southern 4.5 acres of the park, sow native seeds, and plant a variety of oak trees and vegetation found in oak savanna landscapes.

The area of Bohemian Flats located south of Washington Avenue Bridge is currently maintained as mown grass and an MPRB tree nursery. The nursery will remain and the mown grass will be restored to oak savanna. Two mown trails will crisscross the new oak savanna areas to allow river access. New seating and picnic areas will also be included as part of this project.

Bohemian Flats north of Washington Avenue Bridge is not part of this project. The new picnic shelter and volleyball courts will remain accessible, along with the riverside trails, open lawn and boat docking area.

Project Timeline

Construction is expected to be complete this fall and the mown trails will be created next summer. However, the site will be fully or partially fenced off for up to three years to give new plants a chance to establish. The first three years are the most important to successfully restoring a native landscape, so please stay out of the construction site and fenced areas.

Funding for this project was provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR).
