A project that converted areas of mowed turf into naturalized areas and upgraded eroded sections of the northern and eastern shoreline of Lake Nokomis was completed in 2020. Routine annual maintenance helps establish these newly planted areas.
Maintenance is most critical in the first few years because native plants are slow to mature. It is important to keep any weeds and invasive species under control while native plants develop.
A prescribed burn of the newly created naturalized areas along the shore of Lake Nokomis is scheduled either May 25 or 26, weather permitting. The prescribed burn will help control undesired species, remove thatch and return nutrients back into the soil.
Prescribed burns are routine in natural areas throughout the Minneapolis park system. The work will be carried out during optimal weather conditions by trained and experienced staff.
