Elliot Park improvements update: Pilot project for soccer field safety fencing

This week, contractors working for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) began installing additional segments of fencing at Elliot Park’s soccer field. This work is part of a pilot project planned with the community and is intended to improve safety on and around the field, especially during games.

The additional fencing is temporary and located along east side of the soccer field; soccer games at this location will proceed as planned. In the future, some of these fencing elements may become permanent; others will be be used only during soccer games and practice sessions.

Improvements project on the park’s east side

Meanwhile, MPRB is working to engage a construction contractor for improvements to the park’s east side.

We anticipate construction in the park will begin in early summer and will share a timeline and other details when they are confirmed.

The improvements are based on the approved design concept for Elliot Park that was developed with community feedback in 2024. They include:

  • Ornamental fencing and landscaping along park edges
  • Flexible performance area or lawn for formal/informal events and games
  • Patio/flexible sports plaza area near recreation center
  • Splash pad/patio near the existing basketball courts
  • New playground on the park’s south side, near the recreation center and parking
  • If budget allows: concrete paths that glow at night; community murals on the recreation center exterior or basketball court

MPRB thanks everyone for their support and patience as we work to improve parks across Minneapolis.
