Construction begins soon on improvements for Field #2

An upgraded Field #2 anticipated to reopen in fall 2023

Construction on athletic field improvements at Northeast Park is set to begin mid-September. The lights, dugouts, fencing and irrigation systems will be upgraded at Field #2, located on the east side of Fillmore Street NE.

The upgraded field will also have adjustable bases to accommodate a variety of play and the lighting improvements will extend playable hours.

Construction is scheduled through November 2022, then it will pause for the winter and resume next spring, with the renovated field anticipated to reopen in fall 2023. Field #4 will remain open during construction. Financing for this project was provided in part by the Hennepin County Environmental Response Fund.

Field improvements are part of a phased approach to building improvements outlined in the Northeast Park Master Plan, finalized in 2014 and updated as part of the East of the River Park Master Plan, a cohesive, long-term plan for all neighborhood parks in Northeast/Southeast Minneapolis that was approved in 2019. The park has received many upgrades since then:

  • The Northeast Recreation Center was built
  • A new playground opened
  • Tennis courts were resurfaced
  • A new bike park was installed
  • A new mural was painted on the maintenance building
  • The mini golf course was removed and replaced with green space and picnic tables
  • Paths and lighting were upgraded
