The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is pleased to announce that construction begins next week on Farview Park’s Phase 2 improvements project.
The Phase 2 improvements expand on the playground installed in 2020 with a new adventure play area and accessible path that extend up the Farview hill (see 1 – 4 in the top image above). Careful grading and a decorative stone retaining wall woven into the hillside protect trees and woodland plantings with native Minnesota species include shrubs, trees and perennials.
From the adventure play area a natural surface path to the top of the hill curves through additional plantings that showcase native oak savannah plant communities and the park’s giant bur oak tree. A hilltop seating area offers incredible views of the Mississippi River, downtown Minneapolis and beyond.
Additional Phase 2 improvements will be constructed between the athletic field and existing playground, and south of the existing playground.

- New cold-storage facility replaces the existing field storage building
- Athletics event space improvements include better sightlines to the field; drinking fountain; portable toilets in decorative enclosures and improved landscaping
- Updated spectator seating, including a new picnic area overlooking the field with grills and new tables, with landscaping and a ADA-compliant path connecting to the athletic field and storage building
- Upgraded security with cameras, lighting and improved sightlines from the recreation center to the play areas, courts and picnic areas
Bottom image above:
- New full basketball court with updated lighting replaces two existing, aging half-courts
- Picnic area improvements with tables, grills and coal receptacles
- Infiltration basins planted with pollinator species near the existing playground (bottom image above), designed to capture stormwater runoff from hard surfaces and paved areas
- Landscaping with pollinator-friendly turf, other pollinator plantings and trees and shrubs around the new adventure play area (more information below)
We’re excited to watch these planned changes take shape at Farview Park in the coming months! MPRB greatly appreciates all the input from community members and staff that helped develop the plans.
During Construction
Work is expected to continue into late fall, with contractors likely finishing work in spring 2026.
Please stay out of fenced construction areas for your safety and that of others.
