The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is pleased to announce that contractors will begin work next week on playground improvements at Lynnhurst Park.

We anticipate that construction will be largely complete this fall. However, due to delays in manufacturing and shipping, the climbing boulder (item 3 in the image above) will be installed in spring 2026.

During construction, the playground and a portion of the parking lot west of the playground will be closed. For your own safety and that of others, please stay out of all fenced areas.

About the playground improvements

This project replaces playground equipment and surfacing that is worn, difficult to maintain and at the end of its useful life.

The concept plan for improvements is based on community and MPRB staff feedback and priorities, site conditions and the project budget; it includes desired elements and addresses noted issues to the greatest extent possible.

New play elements include:

  • a climbing boulder
  • imaginative play
  • structure for younger (2-5-year-old) children
  • accessible swing

Features based on popular elements from existing equipment include:

  • slider/zipline
  • multiple slides
  • monkey bars
  • sand play
  • existing swings in good condition – two sling-types and a tire swing – will be refurbished
  • small area for sand play in the 2-5 yr old play area

New surfacing combines engineered wood fiber (playground mulch) and poured-in-place rubber.
