Construction at Bethune Park field and site improvements project begins this summer

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is pleased to announce that construction of planned field and site improvements at Bethune Park will begin this summer.

Desired improvements of additional trails and trail area lighting, additional shade and seating for wading pool, new drinking fountain, and trail repairs. And completed improvements of wading pool (2015) and new play equipment (2018).

The final design and layout (see image above) renovates the existing greenspace into a premiere baseball field, that includes covered dugouts, a batting cage, and a scoreboard.  The field will include a temporary outfield fence to allow for a multifield sport outfield.

In addition, the park improvements will include trail and lighting improvements to connect to the new ballfield.  The improvements will also include a new renovated basketball court.

Public Impacts during Construction

As noted, construction is planned for this summer and will extend into the fall. During that time:

  • The greenspace at the park’s westside will be closed during construction.  The basketball court will be closed throughout the summer and will be open upon completion.
  • Access to the volleyball court and playgrounds may be interrupted briefly at times, but will mainly remain open.

Project Timeline

  • July 2024– Basketball Court Renovation Begins
  • August 2024 – Field and Site Construction Begins
  • Fall 2024 – Construction Completion
