Right now workers are creating 75,000 blue shingles offsite and expect to have the Bandshell roof done over the winter
The Lake Harriet Bandshell roof is being repaired in sections this fall and winter.
In September, workers successfully tested the new cedar shingles on a trial section of the roof. Now they are in the process of hand-dipping approximately 75,000 cedar shingles in a special coating at an offsite location so that the shingles match the blue sidewalls painted earlier this year and are able to last longer than the previous shingles.
The east side of the Bandshell roof is currently being replaced and work will continue in sections, clockwise around the building throughout fall and early winter. The refectory building is expected to be reroofed over the winter.
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board appreciates the public’s patience while work continues on this complicated repair project.
Project History and Schedule
The first phase of repairs were completed in spring and early summer. This included updated windows, remodeled bathrooms, upgraded electrical systems, and, most noticeably, a new blue color for building sidewalls that closely matches the color of the Bandshell in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Bread and Pickle closed for the season on October 15 and will return in the spring. Thank you for continuing to support them throughout the construction process.
Next year the building next to the boat launch and covered pavilion area next to the concessions building will be repaired in the spring and fall.
Please stay away from areas under construction, follow onsite safety signs and do not go into areas that are fenced off. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board appreciates the public’s patience as the Bandshell is repaired.
