Project included one of the park system's first futsal soccer courts - two others opened this month in other parks
Posted on 28 October, 2025Yesterday the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) celebrated big improvements at Whittier Park! Constructed over the summer and fall, new features include:
- an expanded playground
- an enclosed futsal soccer/youth basketball court
- a plaza connecting the court and play areas
- a basketball shooting area
- landscaping, including a stormwater basin with native plants
- upgraded lighting, seating, picnic tables, bike racks and paths

Whittier court is one of three newly built for futsal soccer
Following years of planning, MPRB is proud to bring outdoor futsal soccer facilities to Minneapolis neighborhood parks. Whittier Park’s court does double duty as a youth basketball court, while a second larger court at nearby Clinton Field Park will host a celebratory tournament next spring. Audubon Park’s court also just opened with temporary markings for play; it will be painted and striped next spring.
The Whittier neighborhood-based Futsal Society served as a steadfast advocate for the courts throughout the planning, design and construction process. This community organization started in 2016 at Whittier Recreation Center and now organizes teams and leagues for youth throughout Minneapolis.
MPRB officials thanked Hennepin County and its Youth Activities Grants Program for supporting construction of the futsal soccer courts at Whittier and Clinton Field parks, and Whittier Alliance for its partnership and support during these and other park projects in the Whittier neighborhood.
