Trail that opened in 2016 along Northeast Minneapolis riverfront proposed to be named after pillar in Minneapolis running community
Posted on 11 April, 2025The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is hosting a public hearing on naming the trail along the east bank of the Mississippi River between 8th Avenue NE and approximately 16th Avenue NE in Minneapolis “Rick Recker Trail.” That hearing is scheduled Wednesday, April 16, 2025 at 5:45 pm in the Board Room at Mary Merrill Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) Headquarters, 2117 West River Road.
This section of trail opened in fall 2016. It connects Boom Island Park, Graco Park, and Sheridan Memorial Park. Rick Recker was a lifelong resident of Minneapolis who ran on trails throughout the city nearly every day from the early 1960s all the way up to early 2022.

Speak in person: Go to the MPRB Headquarters Board Room (second floor) before the hearing begins and add your name to the sign-up sheet at the Board Room entrance. You can also call 612-230-6400 before noon on April 16 to sign up to speak.
Email written comments: Email your comments to OpenTime@minneapolisparks.org by 12 pm on April 16. Comments will be included in the public record of the meeting.
Next Steps
This is the second public hearing of two required by the MPRB Naming Policy. The first hearing took place in 2023. The Naming Policy dictates that the Board of Commissioners wait two years to take a final vote after the nomination is made.
