A public hearing on a proposal to change the name of “Xcel Field Park” to “Xcel Energy Park” is scheduled Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at 5:45 pm in the Board Room at Mary Merrill Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) Headquarters, 2117 West River Road.
The MPRB has leased the triangular parcel of land east of Marshall Street NE and south of St. Anthony Parkway since the 1990s. Before that, the site served as a coal storage area for the Riverside power plant.
Xcel Energy completed a soil remediation project in 2013 and the MPRB agreed to a 20-year lease with Xcel Energy in 2014, shortly before Rod Carew All Star Field opened in the northwest corner of the park. The park also offers several horseshoe pits, a large open field, small garden and picnic shelter. Its address is 2900 Marshall St. NE.
