Blue-green algae advisory in effect for both Lake Nokomis beaches

Based on its regular monitoring of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) toxins in Minneapolis lakes, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is issuing a hazardous algae advisory for Lake Nokomis 50th Street Beach. This week’s water quality sample at this location found that Microcystin levels exceeded state-specified MPCA guidelines.

In addition, MPRB is extending last week’s advisory for Lake Nokomis Main Beach. While Microcystin levels at this location were below the advisory guideline, blue-green algae is still abundant in the lake and conditions can change quickly based on weather and wind direction.

Hot weather, sunny skies and water temperatures higher than 75°F are all ideal conditions for the growth of blue-green algae. Scroll down to see recommendations for a hazardous algae advisory.

Additional beach closures

As noted in an update yesterday, five other MPRB beaches are closed:

E. coli bacteria levels at these locations exceeded state-specified guidelines. These conditions are likely due to high water levels washing E. coli into the lakes from their surroundings. Learn more about water quality at Minneapolis beaches.

Recommendations for a hazardous algae ADVISORY

  • Ingesting water with cyanobacteria can be harmful to humans and pets.
  • When in doubt, stay out: Do not swim when a suspected hazardous algae bloom is present.
  • Don’t play in algae scum or mats in the water or on the shore.
  • Before cooking any fish caught in the lake, throw away guts and clean fillet with tap or bottled water.
  • If exposed to blue green algae, shower and rinse immediately.
