The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has extended the first public hearing to Wednesday, June 5, 2024 for a proposal to name a new south Minneapolis neighborhood park “Parque Monarca.” The hearing is scheduled at 5:45 pm in the Board Room at Mary Merrill MPRB Headquarters, 2117 West River Road.

This park covers 1.65 acres next to the Midtown Greenway; its official address is 2828 11th Ave. S. The site previously housed Cepro grain elevators, so the temporary placeholder name “Cepro Site Park” is being used before an official name is approved by MPRB Commissioners.

Previously the name “Midtown Park” was proposed for the park, but that name has been withdrawn and “Parque Monarca” is being proposed through an action by MPRB Commissioners.

Next Steps

This is the first public hearing of two required by the MPRB Naming Policy.

Site History

Hennepin County acquired the former grain elevator in 2000 as part of Midtown Greenway development and turned it into a green space with landscaping and pathways. The land was officially transferred to the MPRB in 2019 and now it’s part of the MPRB neighborhood park system.

In 2022, the MPRB built a new stage, paths, accessible seating area and bike parking, and volunteers planted new trees and plants at the park. A community garden also debuted at the park in 2022.
