Burns begin February 1 and continue periodically as late as April 1
Posted on 31 January, 2023In the coming weeks, people may smell or see smoke from brush pile burns if they are in or near the following locations in the Minneapolis park system:
- Roberts Bird Sanctuary – planned to begin Wednesday, February 1
- Minnehaha Regional Park – area known as Morley’s Prairie, adjacent to Minnehaha Off-Leash Dog Area
- Theodore Wirth Regional Park, near the Quaking Bog
- Cedar Lake Park – several woodland locations
Depending on weather conditions, the burns will occur periodically through April 1, between the hours of 9am and 3pm.
About brush pile burns
Brush pile burns are conducted by staff from the Environmental Stewardship division of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB), which has obtained all required permits. MPRB notifies police and fire departments at the City of Minneapolis and City of Golden Valley, as well as MPRB customer service and the Park Police. These notifications are sent for every burn, both prior to the burn and when it’s complete.
MPRB manages natural areas in the Minneapolis park system to maintain healthy ecosystems and habitat for native plants and wildlife. Burning brush piles is an efficient and effective way to manage invasive plant material, diseased tree debris and debris from other natural resources management work.
