Posted on 7 December, 2022The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is offering multiple opportunities to become a certified lifeguard over Winter Break! These three-day, in-person classes – paired with an online course – provide the essential training necessary to work as a professional lifeguard.
The entire certification course is free for Minneapolis residents ages 17 and under! Scholarships available for Minneapolis residents 18 and over.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants will receive Red Cross certification in Lifeguarding/CPR/First Aid/AED. MPRB lifeguards are paid $17.75- $21.00/hour working 32-40 hours per week during summer.

Requirements
Online Course: Prior to the first in-person class, participants must complete an online blended learning class that takes approximately seven hours.
Links to access the online course will be emailed to the address associated with the participant’s ActiveNet account.
Swim Test: All participants must complete the pre-course swim test, which includes a 300-yard continuous swim, two-minutes treading without using hands, and simulated water rescue requiring a surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet.
The purpose of the pre-course test is to ensure that the participant demonstrates comfort in the water, along with enough speed, strength and endurance to perform a combination of basic skills that are required and built upon throughout the course.
