This project will raise awareness of the goals of Parks for All, a new Comprehensive Plan for the Minneapolis park system approved last fall, and help address vandalism at tagging hotspots in the parks.

Each commission pays a $6,000 artist fee + $3,000 for materials. The application deadline is September 19, 2022. Use the link below to learn how to apply:

Call for Artists: Parks for All Murals

Parks for All

The murals will celebrate the nine core goals of Parks for All, which is guiding all park development, operations and maintenance of the Minneapolis park system through 2036.

This public art project will bring the pages of the new policy to life in the parks, build awareness about the plan and foster a culture of accountability to the new vision by shining a light on the new community-informed goals. The goals are:

  1. Foster belonging and equity
  2. Steward a continuum of nature and recreation
  3. Provide core services with care
  4. Work from our strengths and determine our role in partnerships
  5. Expand focus on health equity
  6. Strengthen ecological connections
  7. Connect through communications and technology
  8. Cultivate a thriving workforce
  9. Operate a financially sustainable enterprise

Vandalism Prevention

Installing murals is a proven method to reduce or eliminate tagging or vandalism. MPRB maintenance staff have identified specific spots in the park system that are frequent targets for vandalism and require countless hours of labor each year to remove and repaint.

Responsive removal of tagging and vandalism also creates staff scheduling challenges, interrupts routine maintenance patterns. It’s very time-consuming work that is hard on morale.

The murals will help reduce the amount of vandalism in the park system, reduce reactionary maintenance efforts required for graffiti removal, beautify park walls, and celebrate the park system and park users.
