Carp virus causing fish kill at Chain of Lakes

A carp virus is causing a large die-off of carp in the Chain of Lakes.

A virus that affects carp is causing hundreds of them to die in the Chain of Lakes.

The presence of Carp Edema Virus in numerous dead carp has been confirmed by a University of Minnesota researcher. The Carp Edema Virus was first identified in Minnesota in 2018 and has been the cause of carp die-offs in several lakes around the state.

Dead carp have been found in Cedar Lake, Lake of the Isles and Bde Maka Ska. It is likely that the die-off will continue for some time and could spread to other connected water bodies, such as Lake Harriet and Lake Hiawatha.

Asset management staff are picking up and disposing of the fish as they are found. Staff estimate that approximately 200 fish have been removed since April.
