Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board renames parkways and park roads near Bde Maka SkaPosted on 5 September, 2019
At its meeting on Aug. 21, 2019, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) of Commissioners approved an ordinance amendment that renames parkways and park roads containing the name “Calhoun.”
The Board action, Resolution 2019-209, amends Chapter 9, Article X of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board Code of Ordinances to rename the following:
- Calhoun Boulevard West to Bde Maka Ska Boulevard West
- Calhoun Drive to Bde Maka Ska Drive
- East Lake Calhoun Parkway to East Bde Maka Ska Parkway
- West Lake Calhoun Parkway to West Bde Maka Ska Parkway
Resolution 2019-209 was approved by the Administration and Finance Committee of the Board of Commissioners on May 15, 2019. The following day, a 45-day public comment period began. The comment period closed July 1, 2019, then MPRB staff collated and summarized the comments and presented the results to the Board of Commissioners at its Aug. 7 meeting. A public hearing and first reading of a proposed amendment also occurred at the Aug. 7 meeting.
The second and final reading of the ordinance amendment took place at the Board of Commissioners meeting on Aug. 21, 2019. After the second reading, the Board of Commissioners voted to approve the ordinance amendment.
The brown parkway signs around Bde Maka Ska were updated on Aug. 22. The green City of Minneapolis traffic signs will be updated at a later date. The MPRB Superintendent will transmit the new names of the parkways and park roads to the City of Minneapolis Director of Public Works, the US Post Office, providers of emergency services, property record custodians, and other interested parties.
