Major improvements underway at Peavey Park!

A gathering at Peavey Park yesterday celebrated a milestone for a park improvements project, which got a major boost in funding from the 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan (NPP20), approved last year.

Supporters at the event included neighborhood residents and park users, staff and District 3 Commissioner Scott Vreeland from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB), representatives from local neighborhood organizations, and Ward 6 City Council Member Abdi Warsame.

The event launched a two-phase construction project that will transform the park over the next year. The first phase of improvements includes three new full basketball courts with lighting, fencing and paths around the courts.

Next spring, construction begins on a new, lighted multi-use field, new playground and central path through the park, plus grading and stormwater-management enhancements.

Peavey Park is among the first neighborhood parks to have major funding for capital investments allocated through NPP20. “It’s is a great example of how NPP20 is helping neighborhood parks throughout the system,” said MPRB Superintendent Jayne Miller.

Before approval of the 2016 agreement between MPRB and the City of Minneapolis, the Peavey Park project was limited to the new basketball courts. The $1,000,000 funding boost from NPP20 made it possible to add an entire second phase to the project; community engagement has been taking place this year on the playground, central path and other improvements to come in 2018.

Visit the Peavey Park improvements page for details on both project phases, as well as community engagement opportunities for Phase 2.
