Board of Commissioners elects new President and Vice President

At the July 20 Board meeting, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board commissioners elected Commissioner Anita Tabb as President and Commissioner John Erwin as Vice President.

The election was held following the Board’s acceptance of resignation letters from Liz Wielinski as President and Scott Vreeland as Vice President. Commissioner Wielinski’s letter and Commissioner Vreeland’s letter were included on the Board agenda. Both commissioners are remaining on the Board.

Following the election, President Tabb and Vice President Erwin thanked their fellow commissioners.

“I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to both Commissioners Wielinski and Vreeland,” said President Tabb. “Commissioner Wielinski was the driving force behind the Neighborhood Parks Plan, the historic agreement providing significant additional funding to the Park Board. An entire generation of Minneapolitans owes her a huge debt of gratitude for allowing our parks to continue to be the very best part of our beautiful city. And Commissioner Vreeland will always hold a special place in my heart because he really believes in doing the best for our community.”

Tabb also expressed her support for our Superintendent Jayne Miller and the staff.  “Our park system has been named the number one park system in the country for four years in a row – and there’s a reason for that,” Tabb said. “I believe that our Board has every confidence in Superintendent Miller and staff to continue this fine tradition.”

“I am honored to serve in a leadership role again,” said Vice President Erwin. “My hope is that we can take a moment to ‘reset’ to insure that all communities are heard and their concerns addressed. Along with this, we have much work to do on the 20 Year Neighborhood Parks Plan, youth programming, greening and increasing wildlife habitat.”
