Join the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and tree lovers of all ages for the 2018 Minneapolis Arbor Day Celebration at Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Park on April 27, 4-8 pm!
This year attendees will enjoy a festival-style celebration full of tree-themed activities and educational opportunities, music, food, beer and, of course, new trees! Anyone can help MPRB Arborists plant 150 trees around the park.
The 2018 Minneapolis Arbor Day Celebration would not be possible without event sponsors People for Parks, Brewing a Better Forest and Pat's Tap. Also, a big thank you goes out to all the community supporters and volunteers, including the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Legacy Council and Kingfield Neighborhood Association.
Elmer the Elm Tree debuted in 1978 to help raise awareness about the potentially devastating effects Dutch Elm Disease posed to Minneapolis’ urban forest. Bold action and management helped taper off the decline of the city’s beloved elm population, which has been diminished but not destroyed more than four decades since the disease began to spread. Large, majestic elm trees still exist in Minneapolis because of this work, unlike many cities across the United States that lost all its elms.
Throughout the years Elmer has served as MPRB Forestry’s go-to mascot for a variety of public education campaigns. Elmer taught residents about improving the health of our city’s trees and reminds us that trees provide millions of dollars’ worth of environmental benefits. Most recently, Elmer starred in the “Water Trees Weekly” campaign which is especially important as thousands of new trees are planted to replace those removed due to Emerald Ash Borer.
Volunteers are essential to the success of this growing, fantastic community event. Please contact Sherry Brooks at email@example.com for more information.
