In May, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) shared that Park Board Commissioners had approved the concept plan for playground updates at Lake Hiawatha Park. Now it is pleased to announce that construction for this project begins later this week – earlier than had been planned.
Playground updates include:
- Refurbishing swing standards with new paint and swings
- Replacing all play equipment in the 2-5-year-old play area
- Refurbishing the large play structure in the 5-12-year-old play area
- Replacing free-standing play elements in the 5-12 container
- Adding nature play elements – a sand table, sand diggers, tree trunks and log slices – to the third play area (closest to the basketball court)
Contractors will begin with installation of fencing and other prep work later this week, followed by removal of outdated equipment next week.
Work on the playground is expected to take five to six weeks to complete; however, rain and storms could impact the schedule.
During construction
Please help keep everyone safe and stay out of fenced areas at all times.
Nearby parks with playgrounds include
- Lake Nokomis Park, near Lake Nokomis Community Center, near East Minnehaha Parkway and Woodlawn Boulevard
- 40th Street Park (formerly Sibley Park) at East 40th Street and 19th Avenue South
