Most of the 51 miles of parkways in the Minneapolis park system include separate paved trails for pedestrians and for bicyclists/skaters/rollerbladers.
In winter, however, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) maintains a single trail for shared use by pedestrians and bicyclists. Temporary signs mark wintertime shared trails.
Shared-trail etiquette and safety
- Pedestrians have right of way. Bicylists must yield to pedestrians.
- Trail users with dogs should use a short leash for everyone’s safety.
- Bicyclists’ speed should be appropriate for the environment, including the number of pedestrians and other cyclists on the trail. Maximum speed for bicycles is 10 miles per hour.

Also good to know:
-
Bicyclists may use parkways; vehicles must share the parkway.
- On city streets outside the park system, the City of Minneapolis maintains 16 miles of on-street protected bikeways and 98 miles of bike lanes. Find maps and more at minneapolismn.gov/getting-around/bicycling.
