Stevens Square Playground Dedication

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and Commissioner Anita Tabb invite you to the official dedication of the new playground at Stevens Square Park on Wednesday, June 24. Join us for a brief program at 6:45 pm followed by a ribbon-cutting, activities for kids, and live music. At dusk the Stevens Square Community Organization will be showing the movie Kung Fu Panda. ***Please note that construction issues may delay the actual opening of the playground. We’ll proceed with the event, however there is a small possibility that the playground will actually open shortly afterwards. Check the project page for updates.***

The new equipment features a large “apple” climber with net climbers and a slide, two “worm” loops, one with a slide, monkey bars, two spinners, side by side climbers, and a talk tube. The unique look is the result of the art identity valued by the community, as well as the need to maximize play value within a small existing playground curb. The existing tree, boulders, and two repainted excavators will be preserved. The playground has poured in place rubber pathways to provide accessible routes and the equipment meets current accessibility and safety guidelines.

Thank you to People for Parks, for donating two benches to the playground! People for Parks is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving Minneapolis Parks and has helped MPRB make substantial improvements since 1977.

The concept plan was developed with public input provided through four community meetings, several site interception surveys, and two on-line surveys. The Stevens Square Community Organization (SSCO) helped publicize the public meetings to plan the improvements. This project is funded with $150,000 from the 2014 MPRB Neighborhood Park Capital Improvement Program (CIP).

If we can provide language interpretation or reasonable modifications for disability, please call 612-230-6472 or email planning@minneapolisparks.org at least two days before the event.

Stevens Square Park is a 2.51 acre neighborhood park at 1801 Stevens Avenue, just south of downtown Minneapolis. Other amenities in the park include a basketball court, tennis court, a pergola, and lawn and picnic areas.

We look forward to celebrating this new neighborhood play area with you!
