Several site improvements at The Mall Park are moving into construction design phase, following the approval of the Southwest Service Area Master Plan at the November 4, 2020 meeting of commissioners for the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB).
While full park improvements are often implemented over a span of decades, MPRB is able to complete some pieces of The Mall plan now as part of a cooperative agreement with the Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES). MCES is going to replace aging sanitary sewer pipe under The Mall. To help minimize impacts to area residents, MCES will be working with both MPRB and the City of Minneapolis to also complete related projects in the area at the same time.
The City of Minneapolis plans to upgrade storm sewer pipe. MPRB’s adopted park plan includes installation of a trail connection between Midtown Greenway and Hennepin Ave through The Mall Park, as well as updated pathway and replacement of roadway at the west end of the park with forested green space.
MPRB and MCES anticipate finalization of construction documents by the early 2021. Construction is currently anticipated to begin in spring of 2021 and be completed in December 2021. Final restoration activities may be completed in early 2022\. More information will be available in early 2021.
