Community Open House to be held June 12th for Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is hosting a community open house on Thursday, June 12, from 6:30 to 8:30 at Nokomis Community Center. This is the first of two open houses scheduled for the Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park Master Plan and Improvements project. The open house will have no formal presentation, so members of the public are welcome to come any time and stay as long as they can. MPRB staff and consultants will be available to receive community input and answer questions.

The open house will consider two main topics:

  • The overall vision for Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park, including needs and wants, areas for improvement, and other general suggestions
  • Concept designs for the 54th Street “Triangle Park” play area, which will be replaced beginning this fall.

Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park includes approximately 660 acres of land surrounding Lakes Nokomis and Hiawatha. From May 2014 through June 2015 MPRB will prepare a master plan for the whole park, as well as plans for improvements to the 54th Street “Triangle Park” playground, Lake Nokomis Beach playground, paved bike and walk trails, and shorelines around Lakes Nokomis and Hiawatha. Due to funding restrictions, this project will not consider Hiawatha Golf Course. Project details are available online, or by contacting Project Manager Adam Arvidson at 612-230-6470 or aarvidson@minneapolisparks.org

In addition to attending the open house, the public may provide input and stay informed about the project in the following ways:

  • Fill out the on-line survey, available on the project webpage.
  • Attend meetings of the project’s Community Advisory Committee, which will be held from 6:30-8:30 pm on June 24, July 29, and August 26 at the Nokomis Community Center. There will be a public comment period at the conclusion of each meeting.
  • Sign up to receive e-mail updates or, if you are already a subscriber, add “Nokomis-Hiawatha Regional Park” to your subscription preferences.
  • Attend the second Community Open House at 6:30-8:30 p.m. on August 14 at the Nokomis Community Center.
  • Attend public hearings tentatively scheduled for July and October 2014. Once details are known, public hearing information will be posted online, emailed to project subscribers, and distributed to local media.
