Ed, 5th Park District Commissioner, 1996 – 2002

Edward (Ed) C. Solomon served as Commissioner for the 5th Park District from 1996 until his death in 2002, but perhaps his most lasting legacy is as the “Mayor of 48th Street.” Here’s his story:

Ed Solomon was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1936, and lived in South Minneapolis for over 40 years. A legendary fixture in the Field neighborhood, he could often be found volunteering as a youth sports coach at nearby McRae Park. He was a cheerleader, fundraiser, teacher, counselor and community builder, and an active member of the McRae Park Council and Field-Regina-Northrup Neighborhood Association. Commissioner Solomon was passionate about developing recreation programs that served youth and was quoted saying it was the Park Board’s greatest strength, as well as challenge, to provide those resources. Upon his passing, Superintendent Mary Merrill said he served the citizens of Minneapolis with zeal and dedication. “His commitment to stand up and be counted on behalf of Minneapolis citizens and MPRB programs and services is legendary.”

In addition to serving as a MPRB Commissioner, Solomon worked for Hennepin Parks – now the Three Rivers Park District. He also served as MPRB Park Agent from 1991 until 1996 when he was appointed Commissioner. He was President of the Board from 2000-2001 and was active with the Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program.

In 2004, Edward C. Solomon Park in the 5th District was named for him.
