Volunteerism Visioning The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is exploring current practices and potential modifications to its volunteer program. Setting a common vision for volunteerism within the park and recreation system is fundamental to this work. It will help establish an understanding of the resources needed to engage and support volunteers.

Milestones (anticipated project schedule by month/season)

Spring 2024

• Prepare Community Engagement Assessment and Plan
• Invite existing and prospective volunteers to provide information to help build the vision

Summer 2024

• Promote engagement
• Continue to collect information

Fall 2024

• Launch additional engagement if needed
• Compile results and develop draft vision statement
• Present results to Executive Team and Commissioners

Winter 2024

• Finalize vision statement

History

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board of Commissioners established a 2023-2026 Volunteerism Performance Goal to “enhance and unify organization-wide volunteer management infrastructure by creating a single tracking system, recruitment strategy, and recognition program that supports all cultures easily accessing volunteer opportunities that range from grassroots to large-scale, and establish a 2026 growth target for volunteerism that incorporates the cultural diversity of the city and the budget request that supports accomplishing the target.”

In January 2023 MPRB staff began to implement a workplan for this performance goal. The first outcome of this staff team is the January 2024 Volunteerism Report. This report documents existing conditions and gaps, and recommendations for organizational structure, tracking systems, recruitment and recognition for the MPRB’s volunteer program.
