Minneapolis Park Board, Pillsbury United Communities, YMCA, Augsburg University and Fairview Health Services seek community input for possible new recreation and wellness center in the Interstate 94/Riverside Corridor

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB), Pillsbury United Communities (PUC), YMCA, Augsburg University and Fairview Health Services are exploring the potential for building a new recreation and wellness center in the Interstate 94/Riverside Corridor.

The new facility would supplement Brian Coyle Community Center programming that already serves this community. A renovation or nearby relocation of the Brian Coyle Community Center is also being explored as part of this project.

As part of the exploration, the partner organizations are completing a market analysis to understand the programmatic needs of the community in this area and where those services can best be served. The analysis will be conducted through a survey which will be administered by ANA Research, a Twin Cities- based independent research firm.

The short survey will be mailed to more than 5,000 area residents. It will also be available online in six different languages: Somali, Oromo, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese and Korean.

Residents who did not receive a survey will be able to provide input through a series of community engagement opportunities planned for 2019.

The MPRB, PUC, YMCA, Augsburg University and Fairview all recognize that their mutual goals for serving the community through programs, activities and facilities may be better accomplished through a partnership.

The proposed new facility would be on the east end of the Augsburg University campus to supplement the services provided at the existing Brian Coyle Community Center.

The Brian Coyle Community Center is located next to Currie Park in the Cedar-Riverside Neighborhood of South Minneapolis. Although owned by the MPRB, the building is leased to PUC and programming for the center is provided by PUC. Multiple community services are available at the Brian Coyle Community Center, including out-of-school time youth programing, senior services, adult education, employment, wellness and nutrition and countless civic engagement activities.
