Concept plans approved for an additional $1 million in improvements at Peavey Park

Phase 2 improvements include new multi-use field, playground and picnic shelter

At their November 29 meeting, Commissioners for the Minneapolis Park & Recreation Board (MPRB) approved concept plans for a second phase of major investments at Peavey Park, funded by $1 million from MPRB’s 20-Year Neighborhood Park Plan (NPP20).

Slated for construction beginning next spring, these improvements include a new multi-use field, playground and picnic shelter, along with site grading and stormwater management. Meanwhile,  the first phase of improvements that includes a new basketball court complex is well under way.

The Board’s approval of the plans followed a public hearing held during their November 15 meeting. The concepts for Peavey Park improvements are guided by its long-term plan, which was approved in 2016 as part of the South Service Area Master Plan for neighborhood parks. They were further developed based on feedback from stakeholder meetings, on-site engagement, online surveys, a youth design camp and a community charrette.

Next Steps

With approval of the concept plans, the Phase 2 improvements proceed to the design, bidding and construction phases. It is anticipated that construction bids will be awarded in early 2018, with construction beginning in the spring.

Project Funding

  • The Ventura Village and Phillips West neighborhood organizations have raised funds to construct the picnic shelter.
  • All other improvements are funded through MPRB’s Capital Improvement Program and an allocation from the 20-Year Neighborhood Park Program.
