Petition to restore the Dakota name Bde Maka Ska to Lake Calhoun now available

Next step in process to change lake name requires at least 15 registered Hennepin County voters to sign petition

The Calhoun/Bde Maka Ska-Harriet Master Plan is a 25-year vision for Lake Calhoun/Bde Maka Ska, Lake Harriet and the surrounding parkland that was approved by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) on May 3, 2017.

Included in the Master Plan is the MPRB’s support for the restoration of the Dakota name Bde Maka Ska to Lake Calhoun, along with actions advocating for the name to be changed through official processes. The next step in the process to change the lake name requires the circulation of a petition describing the change, obtaining signatures of at least 15 registered voters of Hennepin County and directing the completed petition to the County Auditor.

A petition to change the lake name is linked below. The petition must be signed, and each line completed, by a registered voter of Hennepin County. Signatures must be made on a paper copy of the petition.

Please direct signed copies of the petition to:

Attn: Madeline Hudek
2117 West River Road
Minneapolis, MN 55411

Please return copies of the signed petition by Aug. 7, 2017. After this date, MPRB staff will send signed petitions to the Hennepin County Auditor for review.
