Current Phase: Pre-Design
Construction: August 2016
Please join us to celebrate the renovated wading pool and playgrounds on Wednesday, July 5th at 7:30 (view the Grand Opening invitation [PDF]). We will gather by the Powderhorn Recreation Center and pool area for short ribbon cutting ceremony. Refreshments and a temporary tattoo artist will be provided. Also stay for the movie Hidden Figures with Spanish subtitles at 9 pm.
The playgrounds on 10th Ave and 14th Ave should be open by the end of the month (provided weather and construction cooperate).
Last fall, the playground near Powderhorn Recreation Center was renovated and construction began on the Powderhorn wading pool as part of an effort to upgrade old play equipment at Powderhorn Park. This spring, work resumes the week of May 8 when construction begins on the two playgrounds in the northwest and northeast areas of the park.
After discussions with community members on a busy Monday night (in English and Spanish) and the online survey, the equipment for the northeast (10th Ave) and northwest (14th Ave) playgrounds has been revised. See the community comments [PDF] and updated equipment poster [PDF]. Construction will begin shortly after the May Day celebration (approximately May 8th) in 2017. Watch for a grand opening date to be set once the pool is reopened.

Community engagement is expected to begin in May 2015 and extend through the summer. Community engagement will be combined with the South Service Area Master Plan and RecQuest projects as much as possible to maximize the opportunities for feedback.
Based on additional engagement over the summer of 2016, staff revised equipment selections and reviewed them with community members on a busy Monday night at the Powderhorn Recreation Center. Input from that night was combined with input from Online Survey #3. View the input [PDF]. Staff made minor revisions to the equipment based on the comments received in the fall of 2017.
While doing engagement for the South Service Area, staff reopened the engagement process for the playground and asked community members about additional playground options. The purpose of this project is to provide improved wading pool and playground areas. The existing playground equipment at Powderhorn Park was installed in 1989, the wading pool was constructed in 1971, and neither amenities meet current safety and accessibility standards. The pool and playground locations, adjacent amenities such as pathways and seating, play equipment, fencing, shade structures, site drainage, play surfacing, and the construction season may be impacted and will be discussed with the community.
