Applications open for Glyphosate and Integrated Pest Management Community and Technical Advisory Committee

Recently the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) passed a moratorium on the use of glyphosate in all MPRB land and water resource management activities.

A new committee is being created to research viable alternatives to using glyphosate and other toxic pesticides throughout the park system and assist and advise the MPRB in transitioning towards pesticide-free resource management alternatives.

“We believe our parks are for everyone – this means keeping carcinogenic products like Roundup and glyphosate out of our parks and green spaces where youth and families play,” said MPRB President Brad Bourn. “I’m proud that this Board unanimously passed a moratorium on the use of glyphosate and I’m excited to work with smart, engaged community members and experts to identify better alternatives to these and other toxic pesticides through our transition committee process.”

Commitment

A total of eight meetings December 2018-March 2019. Meetings will be two hours long with potential limited additional work outside of meeting hours. Meetings will be held at MPRB Headquarters, 2117 West River Road.

Committee Composition

The committee will contain nine community members nominated by the Board of Commissioners (one by each commissioner) and six technical experts nominated by the Assistant Superintendent of Environmental Stewardship. All nominated committee members must be confirmed by the Board of Commissioners.

January 2019 – Third/Fourth Committee Meetings
