Grand opening for the park system’s first indoor swimming facility is on April 21

You’re invited to a big splash at the new Phillips Aquatics Center! 

Join the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) and Phillips neighbors and community members at a grand opening celebration for the Phillips Aquatics Center on Saturday, April 21, 2018.

The celebration includes a program with remarks from MPRB officials and other dignitaries, including community supporters of the project. Enjoy light refreshments and bring your swimsuit* to take part in a ceremonial community splash to officially open the aquatics center.

Opening day is dedicated to free family swim until 4 p.m. The aquatics center’s regular schedule begins Sunday, April 22; swimming lessons begin Monday, April 23.

  • 11 a.m. Building opens 
  • 11:30 a.m. Program begins
  • 1 p.m. Ceremonial community splash*
  • 1 to 4 p.m. Free family swim*

*Children under 8 must be accompanied in the water by an adult with appropriate swim attire; children ages 9-12 must be supervised by an adult in the pool area.

About the Phillips Aquatics Center

The aquatics center offers year-round indoor swimming, a first for the Minneapolis park system. Under construction for the past year, it is located inside the Phillips Community Center, at 2323 11th Ave. S. in Minneapolis. It features its own welcome desk, where visitors check in to access the facility’s two pools: 

  • A renovated six-lane pool can accommodate swim competitions and features a spectator area.
  • A new four-lane pool is geared to swim instruction, with four lanes and zero-depth accessibility. 

Other features include:

  • Updated locker rooms and a new family/all-gender locker room
  • Community meeting room available for rental
  • Renovated fitness center and teen center

Offering a wide range of programs, the Phillips Aquatics Center serves everyone from seasoned swimmers to people of all ages who are brand-new to pools. Highlights include water aerobics, open swim for families, water fitness for seniors, lap swim and women/girls swim, as well as lessons for all ages and abilities. Go online to browse the full schedule and register. While lessons for the spring session are almost full, information on the summer session will be available next month.
