Plan in place for host of Cedar Lake South Beach improvements

At its April 6, 2016 meeting, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) of Commissioners approved a plan detailing numerous proposed improvements at Cedar Lake South Beach.

Plan details

The plan includes:

  • ADA-accessible ramps and new crosswalk striping on Cedar Lake Parkway
  • Widened bike and pedestrian paths along Cedar Lake Parkway Trail
  • A wide, separated seating plaza between the Cedar Lake Parkway Trail and the beach
  • Low walls and planted bank between the seating plaza and beach to decrease beach slope
  • Stair access to the beach on the east and west sides of the plaza
  • A ramp to wheel canoes/kayaks down to the lake
  • New floating launch dock, canoe racks, bike racks, picnic tables and grill
  • Rehabilitated and relocated community bulletin board
  • Stormwater management improvements
  • Tree and shrub plantings and turf restoration
  • Satellite toilets installed on a concrete pad with ornamental screens
  • Paved access road

Funding

The MPRB would like to thank the Cedar Isles Dean Neighborhood Association for allocating $40,000 in Neighborhood Revitalization Program funds to prepare plans and construction cost estimates for this project. Cedar Lake South Beach is part of Minneapolis Chain of Lakes Regional Park and no regional park funding has been allocated for this project. However, having a MPRB board-approved plan in place will help position it to receive future regional park funding and speed up implementation once funding is secured.
