Dakota name “Bde Maka Ska” added to Lake Calhoun entrance signs

Today workers installed new placards at each of Lake Calhoun’s entrance signs bearing the Dakota name Bde Maka Ska.

The signs were updated in accordance with a September 2 board action taken after a discussion on a report about Lake Calhoun’s name.

Commissioners did not take any action to rename the lake and Park Board legal counsel has advised MPRB that it has no authority to change the lake’s name. The updated signs are intended to honor the Dakota people and educate the public about the lake’s Dakota name.
