Concept design of SWLRT bridges over Kenilworth Channel approved by MPRB

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) commissioners approved a concept designs for bridges spanning the Kenilworth Channel as part of the Southwest Light Rail Transit (SWLRT) project at its September 23 meeting.

MRPB collaborated extensively with the Metropolitan Council and staff from its Southwest Project Office (SPO) to create the concept designs after a Memorandum of Understanding between the two agencies was agreed upon in February. The State Historic Preservation Office also advised on the designs to ensure compatibility with the historic qualities of the Kenilworth Channel and adherence to requirements of the federal Section 106 review process.

The concept design approved by the Board of Commissioners include:

  • Separate bridges for the Kenilworth Trail, LRT and freight rail that allow each bridge to be designed to its specific load and deflection requirements and permit the greatest amount of light possible to reach the channel.
  • Clear span configurations (no piers extending into the channel) for the Kenilworth Trail and LRT bridges.
  • A freight rail bridge that optimizes the visual balance between its deck and supporting piers.
  • Low walls at each edge of the LRT bridge to contain noise generated from light rail vehicle wheels.
  • Sound and vibration dampening methods incorporated into the LRT guideway.

The entirety of the design has not been finalized and MPRB staff will continue to participate in meetings with the SPO and contribute to design refinements.

The Met Council will construct the bridges and improvements to the channel as part of the SWLRT project. MPRB will not be responsible for any portion of the construction, but will own the trail bridge upon completion of the SWLRT project.
